Serving 360 students in Northwest Arizona (between Needles, CA, and Laughlin, NV), Camp Mohave Elementary is an oasis of learning. Camp Mohave students (regardless of family income, race, or ethnicity) are achieving impressive results that exceed the statewide performance of all students in Arizona. Teachers, students, parents, and administrators emphasized how positive relationships, like cool water in a hot desert, bring everyone together in a nurturing and supportive environment.

Teachers and other staff members take time to let all students know they are valued, cared for, and appreciated. Parents believe they are genuinely respected as important partners in their children’s education, as communication flows openly and regularly in ways that encourage parents to believe their children can achieve excellent learning results. As well, Camp Mohave leaders have created an environment where teachers, other school personnel, students, and parents know their accomplishments are recognized, appreciated, and celebrated in ways that make everyone want to maximize their efforts.

Positive relationships, however, are only a start. Camp Mohave’s successes are the result of thoughtful planning as stakeholders have come together to consider how the school can help all its students master challenging academic concepts and skills. Whether students enter the school at, below, or above grade level, educators ensure students will grow academically and learn important skills they will need for success in life. Regularly educators utilize data to ensure all students are making progress. As well, educators utilize data to help them learn from their colleagues’ best practices.
