Thigpen-Zavala Elementary in the McAllen Independent School District is a high-performing, student-centered campus where relationships, collaboration, and unwavering belief in students create exceptional outcomes. A defining feature of the school is its deeply rooted family culture, reflected in remarkable staff retention, strong morale, and a shared commitment to ensuring every child feels safe, valued, and capable of success. Educators consistently describe the campus as home, emphasizing that support extends beyond professional collaboration to genuine care for one another and for the families they serve. This collective ownership fosters consistency, trust, and a unified focus on helping students thrive academically and personally.

Despite serving a high-poverty, highly mobile population where many students face significant challenges outside of school, including housing instability and family separation, Thigpen-Zavala intentionally creates an environment where students experience belonging, encouragement, and high expectations. Staff know students deeply, celebrate accomplishments both large and small, and intervene proactively when support is needed. Prevention rather than reaction defines many of the school’s systems, resulting in positive behavior, strong relationships, and students who are consistently described as respectful, humble, and proud of their school community.

Students celebrate at Thigpen-Zavala Elementary

Academically, classrooms reflect rigorous, standards-aligned instruction supported by data-driven practices using tools such as i-Ready, mCLASS Amplify, and state assessments to inform targeted teaching. All students participate in a daily Targeted Assistance Growth block, receiving intervention, enrichment, or extension aligned to individual needs, while Emergent Bilingual, Special Education, and Gifted and Talented students access grade-level rigor through scaffolds and meaningful learning experiences. Students actively monitor progress, celebrate growth, and develop ownership of achievement through goal setting and consistent feedback.

A vibrant culture of enrichment further strengthens engagement through choir, athletics, science competitions, reading initiatives, clubs, and leadership opportunities that connect students to their peers and community. These integrated practices have produced sustained academic growth, four consecutive A ratings from the Texas Education Agency, repeated distinctions for achievement and growth, and a campus culture where high expectations, compassion, and community pride ensure every learner has the opportunity to succeed.
