Sequoia Elementary in the San Diego Unified School District is a nurturing and academically focused campus where students and adults consistently feel safe, supported, and valued. A strong sense of belonging defines the school experience, with students describing Sequoia as a place where mistakes are treated as opportunities for learning, differences are embraced, and every child is encouraged to grow with confidence. Staff and families frequently characterize the campus as a close-knit community and extended family, reinforced by exceptionally low turnover, multigenerational connections to the school, and a culture where relationships remain central to every decision.
Intentional systems support students’ social-emotional growth and well-being through restorative practices, morning circles, zones of regulation, counseling lessons, and schoolwide Social Emotional Learning aligned to the five core competencies identified by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning. Teachers begin each day by checking in on students’ emotional needs, creating opportunities for reflection, connection, and support before learning begins. Positive behavior is reinforced through “Caught Being Good” tickets, Dragon Leader recognition, staff shout-outs, and celebrations that help students build confidence, empathy, and leadership skills.

Academically, all students receive a guaranteed and viable curriculum through Benchmark literacy and Eureka Math, with instruction intentionally differentiated to ensure English learners, students with disabilities, and struggling learners access rigorous grade-level content. Teachers consistently implement the Gradual Release of Responsibility model, use frequent formative assessments and exit tickets, and adapt strategies to meet individual learning needs while maintaining high expectations. Flexible supports, collaborative planning, and targeted interventions allow students to receive help without sacrificing belonging or engagement. Students describe teachers as caring, encouraging, and persistent in helping them understand concepts through multiple approaches until mastery is achieved.
Visitors to Sequoia observe joyful classrooms, meaningful adult-student relationships, and a campus where students run toward school rather than away from it. These integrated practices have contributed to significant literacy and mathematics growth, recognition for improving achievement, and a learning environment where every child is empowered to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
