Dewey Elementary School in the San Diego Unified School District is a vibrant, student-centered community where every decision is guided by a commitment to accelerate academic achievement while nurturing belonging, resilience, and social-emotional well-being. Serving a uniquely high population of military-connected families, with approximately 85 percent of students having one or both parents in the armed services, Dewey intentionally honors service and cultivates stability through strong family partnerships, schoolwide traditions, and a deeply embedded culture of care. Students consistently describe the school as kind, welcoming, and fun, highlighting caring teachers, supportive counselors, and an environment where they feel safe, valued, and encouraged to grow.

As a Leader in Me school grounded in Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits, Dewey empowers students to set goals, monitor progress, develop leadership skills, and take ownership of their learning. Students articulate clear academic goals and describe routines that support persistence, reflection, and continuous improvement. Instruction is engaging and responsive, with frequent opportunities for hands-on learning, collaboration, art, science exploration, discussion, and interactive activities that make learning meaningful and enjoyable. Teachers are described as attentive and compassionate, providing individualized support, celebrating effort, and ensuring students receive help when needed.

Academically, Dewey delivers a guaranteed, viable curriculum enriched through STEAM opportunities, one-to-one devices, and targeted supports funded through Title I, Local Control Funding Formula, and a Department of Defense QUEST grant. Ongoing assessment practices, intervention systems, and collaborative professional learning ensure instruction remains data-driven and responsive to student needs. Comprehensive counseling services, food distributions, and community partnerships further support the whole child and whole family. Together, these efforts create an inclusive and joyful learning environment where students are challenged, supported, and inspired to become confident learners and compassionate leaders, contributing to strong academic outcomes and recognitions such as the California Purple Star School designation.
