Michelle Irwin

Michelle Irwin is a transformational education leader dedicated to creating schools where every student is known, challenged, and supported. With over three decades of experience as a site and district administrator, she brings a deep commitment to equity-centered school design, adult learning, and student wellbeing.

Most recently, as Area Superintendent for all middle schools in San Diego Unified School District (2023–2025), Michelle coached and mentored principals, led redesign initiatives focused on wellness and access, and built cross-departmental partnerships to remove barriers and expand opportunity. Her leadership was recognized with the honor of 2024 Equity Leader in San Diego County.

Before serving at the systems level, Michelle spent 21 years as a principal in San Diego Unified, where she championed initiatives that transformed teaching and learning. She launched the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, introduced restorative practices, redesigned master schedules to open pathways to rigorous coursework, and advanced equitable grading and culturally responsive teaching. Her leadership earned her recognition as Principal of the Year (Region 18) and VAPA Principal of the Year from both the district and county offices of education.

Today, Michelle continues her impact in higher education, preparing aspiring school leaders to navigate complexity with vision, compassion, and measurable results. Her approach blends data-informed practice, reflective coaching, and systems-level design to foster meaningful and lasting change.

Michelle holds an M.A. in Spanish Linguistics (University of Colorado Boulder) and a B.A. in Spanish (University of Northern Colorado), with administrative and teaching credentials from the University of San Diego and San Diego State University.
