First, create a school environment where all students feel safe, respected, and valued. Next, ensure that every classroom (including those serving students in the Dual Immersion Program) is focused on teaching challenging academic concepts that are at least as rigorous as the concepts taught to students in other schools across the district or the state. Then, provide teachers with useful tools and support that build their capacity to help every student develop solid understandings of the concepts and skills they need to learn. This is the formula behind the success of Dr. Peter Marshall School, serving over 700 PK-6 grade students in Anaheim, CA.

While the formula sounds simple, the truth is that success has required the coordinated effort of school administrators, district leaders, teachers, support staff, parents, and students. For example, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports Coaches have helped build the school’s positive environment by recognizing students who model respectful, responsible, and safe behavior as they engage in academic tasks. School leaders organize and provide parent-requested sessions that help parents address important topics such as cyber-safety and bullying prevention. Marshall teachers participate in a District Curriculum and Assessment Review Team that works on unit assessments, writing prompts, and other tools to help ensure a consistent focus on rigorous academic standards. Additionally, the school’s Instructional Practices Coach meets regularly with grade-level teams of teachers to review data and plan instructional approaches that are likely to generate academic progress for all students. All these efforts are resulting in great outcomes for Marshall students. Teachers teach and students learn in a pleasant, accepting environment, and student achievement, on multiple indicators, exceeds the average of all schools in California.
